MOMMYTRAC LETS PARENTS MONITOR FROM ANYWHERE

Imagine being able to pull out your PDA and watch a full motion live color image of what your child is doing at home at that moment. Parents with infant children certainly have their hands full. Keeping a watchful eye on what their children are doing at any given moment is probably one of the most important demands of being a parent, and the most time consuming. So anything that makes the job of watching easier and more effective will probably be welcome. One technological advancement that fits that bill is a new hardware/software/service system called MommyTrack. Developed by Cenuco Security in Boca Raton, Florida, MommyTrack is billed as the world's first mobile video child safekeeping and monitoring system that can be viewed via a handheld PDA.

The system consists of two wireless video cameras, a base receiver station that plugs into your computer's USB port, a wireless PDA and monitor software. You can add up to two extra cameras if you like. The service requires your computer be hooked to the Internet via a broadband service such as cable modem or DSL. After placing the cameras and installing the software, you basically go about your business as the monitoring program runs quietly in the background. When you are away from home, simply use your PDA or even one of the newer cell phones with a color display screen and you can instantly watch what's going on in front of any of the cameras. The MommyTrack web site details a number of PDAs and cell phones that will work with the system. Plus if you're near a computer, you can also log on to the web and access your cameras as well.

Included with the initial purchase of MommyTrack is one year of monitoring service. After that, the service is $19.95 a month. This also includes a 48 hour archiving service so you can actually go back in time up to 48 hours from the current moment and review what was happening. Up to eight months of archiving time is available (check the company for rates) if you feel you'll ever have the need to go back that far.

MommyTrack works with most of the major carriers such as Sprint, AT&T and VoiceStream. At this time Cingular and Nextel do not support the wireless services needed to use MommyTrack, but a Cenuco spokesperson indicated that Nextel would soon be on board.

The MommyTrack system with 2 color wireless cameras, base station, wireless PDA, software and first year free service goes for $2295. Cenuco also a offers business version of their wireless security system, Security Communicator. Check their web site for more details.

RocketMouse is a Mighty Mouse

There are a lot of devices that let you mouse around and there are a lit of devices that let you move the mouse pointer without needing a table surface. But it's a tough job finding pointing devices that act as both without sacrificing some basic functionality. Now I'm not saying that the RocketMouse is an exception but I am saying that it is different and you should take a closer look at it. After all, comfort and usability is a personal thing.

The first thing that makes the RocketMouse stand out from other mice is that you hook your index finger through it. Its ergonomic design lets the body of the RocketMouse rest comfortably in your hand with your thumb resting over its small trackball. Two additional buttons can be pressed by your thumb as well. Your index finger also rests over the main mouse button. You can move the cursor with your thumb and press the mouse button with your index finger with virtually no movement other than the pressing action. And since the index finger opening goes completely through the top of the mouse, you can use it right or left handed. The RocketMouse is ideal for laptops and presentations where no table surface is available. The 5 foot cord may be a bit short but any USB extension cable will work just fine. The USB RocketMouse works with both PC and Macintosh computers. $29.95.
