BACKUP YOUR DATA ONLINE
For years I have preached on the importance of maintaining a backup of your computer's data. My favorite saying regarding making a backup continues to be "It's not IF your hard drive will fail, it's WHEN it will fail." Basically, I believe that sooner or later, you will have some kind of data corruption occur on your hard drive and when that happens, you will be thankful that you have a backup.
There are many different backup application you can buy that let you perform system backups to removable media such as recordable CDs and DVDs, and even external hard drives. But another backup method that has also been around for sometime is off site backup. Basically your data is stored at a physical location far away from where your computer currently resides. And now that the Internet is just about everywhere these days, I thought that offsite backup deserves another look. One company that offers an application and offsite backup service is Restorion. Billed as "The Path to Data Salvation," Glorio is a software and offsite system that backs up your computer's data via the Internet.
After installation and the initial configuration, the Glorio software determines which files require a backup. The data is then encrypted, compressed and then uploaded to Restorion's offsite secure server. The files, folders and other data you have stored offsite are displayed in an easy to use online directory. The organization allows you to quickly retrieve the files you want in the event of a disaster. You can elect to restore a single missing file or restore everything at once. It's completely under you control.
According to Restorion, their specially designed offsite vault servers are set up to be ultra-secure, double redundant, uninterruptible and self-healing. All of that simply means that you can be sure that your precious data will be maintained and always retrievable 24/7.
Using the Glorio application, you can configure the backups to occur every evening or even in the background while the computer is being used. You can create combinations of backup sets and schedules. You can also choose "Back Up Now" any time you feel a backup is necessary.
Glorio will work on virtually any Internet connection including a slower dialup since the proprietary compression used really does make your files a lot smaller. However, having a broadband connection is still ideal. And while making a more traditional backup to local media is still the most common method of backing up a computer, using an offsite backup system such as Glorio has certain advantages and considerations. For example, offsite storage adds the additional protection of your backups from fire and theft.
Restorion offers the first month of offsite storage free. This includes the ability to restore your data at any time. After that, the cost is $36 a month per gigabyte and includes the first gigabyte. Pricing is based on the amount of compressed data you have stored on their servers. There is no charge for the Glorio software, additional computers or networked drives. The storage cost goes down by ten percent after five gigabytes. Other payment options are also available. Check with Restorian website for more details.
